The incident occurred on platforms 14 and 15 when a massive crowd gathered to board the train, the Prayagraj Express, a special service for the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival.

Reportedly the situation escalated when an announcement regarding a platform change led to confusion among the crowd. As passengers hurried to the newly assigned platform, some slipped while descending a footbridge connecting the platforms, triggering a domino effect that culminated in the fatal stampede.

Outlook spoke to one eyewitness, Arun Gupta, a 38-year-old vendor who was selling food on the platform at that time. Kumar said that while the platform was excessively crowded—over 1500 general tickets were sold for the express train—the jostling began when rumours spread that the Express was not stopping on platform 14 as thought by the devotees. “They all rushed to the connecting bridge, which is very flimsy to begin with, and it was swaying as people pushed on to each other,” says Gupta. 

Ajay, a 31-year-old cleaner who showed up to work today at 6 am, says the night cleaning crew was hosing down the tracks and platform when he arrived at work. 

"The crowd was out of control; everyone was rushing to get to the next platform, and no one could control it,” recalls Gupta. The sudden surge of people led others to lose their footing and fall as the crowd swarmed over them, he remembers seeing. 

“The coolies were the ones helping people get up to their feet, and I even saw a few lifting up and carrying older people and children to safety,” says Gupta.

This is the second stampede that has occurred in relation to the Mega Kumbh Mela, which has been advertised by the government for its record-breaking numbers. As recently as February 12, UP’s Yogi Adityanath had said that those who had made fun of the mela were now among the 50 crore individuals attending the mela. 

In the wake of the stampede, police officials have been deployed onto every platform at the railway station. “There are six to seven police personnel per platform,” one ASI told Outlook, adding to keep his name confidential as police have been warned to not speak to media. 

SI Gurupreet Singh, who has been on traffic management duty since February 15 at 9am, said that the news of the stampede reached him through the 100 emergency number. 

He told Outlook that he saw the station’s porters using handcarts to transport the injured to waiting ambulances. 

The injured have been transported to nearby medical facilities, including the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital, where they received urgent care. And six of the dead are in RML hospital, where their bodies are being released to family members who laid claim.

The incident prompted immediate reactions from India’s President Droupadi Murmu, who said, "Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway station. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for a speedy recovery of those injured."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wrote, "My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede."

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaish has announced that there will be a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact causes of the incident. He said it was important to understand the factors that led to the stampede so as to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As of noon, all Delhi police officers of DCP and DGP rank had arrived at the DCP, Railways office to hold a meeting on the incident. 

This incident is not isolated; India has a history of stampedesnuebe gaming, especially during large religious events. In January 2025, a similar tragedy occurred during the Maha Kumbh Mela, resulting in the deaths of dozens of pilgrims. As recently as this month, devotees pelted a train at Madhubani station in Bihar and smashed its windows on the suspicion that they wouldn’t be allowed to board the train to Kumbh.
